Well it’s a good start.

The Count Every Vote Act of 2005 will provide a voter verified paper ballot for every vote cast in electronic voting machines. To encourage more citizens to exercise their right to vote, the Count Every Vote Act designates Election Day a federal holiday and requires early voting in each state. The bill also makes it a federal crime to commit deceptive practices, such as sending flyers into minority neighborhoods telling voters the wrong voting date, and makes these practices a felony punishable by up to a year of imprisonment.

This is a great post from John Battelle’s Searchblog about the NY Times’ acquisition of About.com. He talks about the possibilities this will give them for broadening their audience and possibly getting them setup for a web based subscription service.

mp3 – “You and your third dimension…Oh nothing it’s cute. We have 5. …th..thousand yes 5 thousand, don’t question it! …Well that sounds like a personal problem.”

mp3 – “Whoa did those just come out of your eyes? ….Damn those are fast..we are not impressed, it wasn’t that cool.”

Man, who didn’t see this coming? Sign up for the Napster 14 day trial, install a plug-in for wma conversion for Winamp, launch Winamp and play through the files to convert them to DRM free wav files. Burn to CD. Repeat. “Friggin Idiots!”

Update: Straight from the horses mouth. JT has informed me that it isn’t him singing. But it sounds EXACTLY like him. I think maybe he did it in his sleep or something. So I guess this story is really not funny anymore. Damnit!

This is a hilarious rendition of Oh Holy Night some friends of mine did while at Berklee. It recently resurfaced when some new friends and I were listening to funny Berklee projects and they said “Hey, play him that Oh Holy Night song.” and it turned out to be the same one. Apparently someone sent it to the head of Scholarship at Berklee just for fun. Well here it is for all to enjoy.

Jimmy Smith was found dead in his home in Arizona on Feb. 8th. He’s Back at the big Chicken Shack in the sky. *sniff*

Jimmy Smith was the man, I saw him a couple times while at Berklee. He played at the House of Blues and was amazing. Here’s a man that could barely walk to the stage yet exuded more energy when he played than I thought possible. He still played the pedals, and I quote:

Raspy old black man voice: “I’m playin’ these fuckin’ pedals.” Taps the pedals, “My legs are fuckin’ tired.”

Priceless.

We’ll miss ya Jimmy!

I found this on a TiVo forum. It’s an app (Windows only) that will take a .tivo file transfered using TiVo to Go and rip the encryption. Pretty sweet. I’m going to try it tonight because I finally got the service update for my TiVo.

Awesome article explaining the completely ridiculous business model that is Napster. Even if they had a device like the iPod no one would pay for this shit. 15 bucks a month to rent a music collection. That’s the lamest idea ever. I’m not totally on the iTunes band wagon either, I mean DRM (Digital Rights Management) sucks and the sooner content providers that use DRM are boycotted the better (I can’t say that I’ve boycotted the iTunes Music Store, but I’ve definitely lost interest).

Here’s a page that has a nice selection of source material used in many Hip-hop and House tracks. (Via memepool) Thanks Mike!

Julien’s originals – Samples

Here’s another pretty sweet page that’s linked from Julien’s site. It’s basically a search engine for sampled music. Search by source tracks/artist or by sampling artist. I don’t see the deathrays on the list….yet.
